HCL Domino is the right choice when customer and business needs change rapidly, and these changes have an immediate impact on the company’s systems. For developers and organizations, these changes can require long development cycles or result in high costs, and maintenance and integration are time-consuming. This slows response to customer and business needs, which in the worst case means that competitors get ahead of the game.
Domino supports fast and modern low-code application development, robust integration, data security solutions, and cost-effective maintenance. In this blog post, we discuss the central new functions of HCL Domino and their benefits for software development and management. What is low-code software development? Read more in our previous blog post.
We can also discuss Domino’s new features and HCL’s services in person at the HCL Nordic User Group community in Stockholm in October 2024. The community was born out of the need to bring HCL users together around the same topic. Jarkko Pietikäinen, who works with HCL, will be attending from Pinja. You can also meet other customers, partners, developers, and representatives of HCL. Innovations, development paths, and practical solutions will be presented. Come and network with your peers.
The versatile HCL Nomad for application development
HCL Nomad is a solution for using present and new applications in browsers and mobile devices. Nomad can even replace Notes on workstations and achieve significant maintenance cost savings. With Nomad, applications can be used anywhere, anytime, and updated simultaneously for all users.
Benefits of Nomad- Replaces the installation and maintenance of Notes, reducing IT costs.
- Extends applications to smart devices while still supporting offline use.
- Provides a competitive low-code platform for new applications.
- Lets you use the mobile device’s features (such as GPS and camera) in applications.
Nomad can be extended to new platforms, while the Restyle tool can be used to edit the interface. It modernizes the visualization of Nomad and Notes applications. The function improves user-friendliness and experience by providing ready-made color themes and layouts. The tool does not require coding, so anyone can use it. Restyle works with all applications and does not affect their functionality. It can be applied as often as you like, which helps keep the UI fresh and modern.
Modern integrations and data security
Domino now has a REST API that supports all of its features. Applications can also use the REST APIs of background systems and cloud services. In addition, new directory integrations allow applications to log in via AD, Azure/EntraID, and OIDC, among others.
Data security has always been one of Domino’s main strengths. It supports strong encryption protocols and offers advanced tools to protect users and data. These include multi-factor authentication, strong encryption, user rights management, and real-time security reporting. They ensure safe use and data security.
Benefits of integration and data security
- Applications can easily be integrated with any background system or cloud service.
- Enables Notes/Domino application analytics with Power BI, for example.
- Improves data security by supporting modern authentication methods and directory integrations.
- REST API provides secure and managed access to Domino applications from other systems.

The new Volt MX Go MC (Multi experience) development platform is offered alongside HCL Domino. It enables the development and extension of applications to various devices such as tablets, smartphones, and smartwatches. It offers affordable licensing options for current Domino customers and enables the conversion of Domino applications into native MX applications for smart devices. Extending applications is made easy with the Domino-compatible VoltScript and VoltFormula programming languages. The Volt MX Go platform is proven to improve development efficiency by up to 60 percent. It is based on low-code development methods, and supports a wide range of technologies including XML, SOAP, JSON, Java, JavaScript, SQL, SAP ICO, IBM MQ, and AWS S3.
HCL Volt MX was selected as the best development platform when the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) announced the winners of the CODiE Awards 2024 in the Business Technology category at a virtual event on May 21 2024.
