In spring 2022, Pinja and eleven of its forestry clients launched a project to create a solution supporting the new StanForD 2010 communication standard within the Forest by Pinja system. The project started with a definition phase in March 2022 with a team of client representatives, and product development started in October 2022.
Pinja's StanForD 2010 project will result in a solution that enables real-time management of logging instructions with a single tool. The solution allows logging instructions to be changed in the middle of a logging operation, and the instructions can be updated simultaneously for all logging machines. The solution also brings new reports to the user.
The new solution reduces manual work and error-proneness by eliminating the need to create separate instructions for different measuring devices. Real-time harvesting instructions ensure that harvesters always produce timber according to demand.
The major players in the forest industry have already adopted StanForD 2010 in their machinery. So it is time for solution providers to upgrade their offerings to start using the features of the new standard. Pinja will launch its StanForD 2010 compliant services for clients in fall 2023. Pinja’s project team helps clients adopt the new version, and provides comprehensive training and help materials to support the implementation. Developed in partnership with clients, the solution meets the needs of different clients, and helps them make the most of the benefits of the standard.
StanForD 2010 is a forest machine communication standard developed for the forest industry. Launched in 2010 as a Nordic collaboration, the standard has gradually established itself in the production of the industry’s largest machine manufacturers. The aim of the standardization work is to update the forest machine communication standard to meet the IT requirements of modern data transfer, and to enable interface compatibility with commercial solutions.
Pinja’s wood sourcing clients consider the joint project important, and the team quickly came up with a clear, common goal. The current change, which affects the whole sector, made the team committed and invested in cooperation. The versatile and in-depth expertise that clients bring to the project ensures that the end result is a product that serves the needs of all forestry clients. The common goal of the team was to create a first version of the product with the functionalities necessary for production. The team found a common understanding of what the first version should contain.
Thanks to this cooperation, the different approaches of the clients were taken into account in the specification work and the different requirements were described. The standard allows for a more versatile implementation, but lower priority development requests were saved for later. Further development is still planned, in cooperation with clients.
Overall, clients have been satisfied with the cooperation. The feedback highlighted how well the team, made up of different actors in the forestry sector, worked together. The collaboration also allowed clients to challenge their own practices, learn from each other, and gain new perspectives on how to use the product. Pinja’s flexible but firm project management was praised by the team.
Pinja is also satisfied with the results of the definition phase. Without the expert input of clients, the definition phase would not have been able to cover the different perspectives and needs with the same depth and breadth, and the product development phase would have become much more cumbersome. The efficient project model also helped in keeping the project on schedule. The expert team also contributes to the product development phase, and once this is sufficiently advanced, the piloting of the system can begin.
Work on the StanForD 2010 standard will therefore continue in the product development phase. In the next blog post, we will share more news on product development.
