Industrial digitalization increases carbon handprint

Finger pressing a recycling icon floating in the air, surrounded by icons related to sustainability

Responsibility has become a real Big Question in industry in the past few years. As we become more environmentally aware, companies have a rather conflicting role in it: They can innovate solutions that contribute to sustainable development but at the same time their activities might put a strain on the environment.

Actions that have a positive impact on the environment are called a carbon handprint whereas the opposite would be a carbon footprint. Their delicate balance is at the core of responsibility.

These days, it’s crucial to pay genuine attention to responsibility since consumers have power and social media is an efficient grapevine.

A few years ago, responsibility might have been just a buzzword that could be thrown around in different contexts to spice up the message. Talking about responsibility was mostly meant to create a positive image of the company.

These days, it’s crucial to pay genuine attention to responsibility since consumers have power and social media is an efficient grapevine. Conscious citizens punish irresponsible companies, and the consequences are felt in profits.

This is why investors also require responsibility. It has become a fixed part of risk control, says Nordea. Naturally responsibility is also important when it comes to employee experience and employer image. More and more companies have started paying even more attention to the responsibility of business and their carbon footprint - and Pinja is no different.

Carbon handprint has a positive impact

Carbon handprint is a concept in responsibility that has been developed to describe environmental actions, although it is sometimes easy to mix up with the more well-known and similar-sounding carbon footprint. However, they mean the exact opposite things.

According to Sitra’s definition, carbon handprint refers to the impact of companies cutting down on emission. Sitra has produced a report through VTT about the opportunities brought about by carbon handprint to increase understanding of it in the Finnish business life. An ongoing research project is aiming to develop methods to define carbon handprint even more specifically.

Environment benefits from efficient industry

We at Pinja want to be a part of leaving our own carbon handprint. We help our customers improve their activities in many ways, starting from facility planning. We develop solutions that improve the cost efficiency, communications and reliability of the service that your company provides. Our solutions help make your operations more efficient and improve your productivity. Profitability increases when less production input is lost.

In practice, all our digitalization tools help achieve better profitability and, at the same time, a smaller carbon footprint. When the occupancy rate goes up, supply chains and material flows are in control, and production management, quality control and maintenance are up to date, this benefits the environment too.

Nature is not made of zeros and ones but industrial digitalization can help us save our planet. Efficiency is also responsibility.
