EUDR and TRACES system in a nutshell

The EU Deforestation Regulation, EUDR, aims to reduce deforestation and forest degradation by preventing illegally sourced forest-based products from being placed on the EU market. It covers several commodities, including wood, coffee, soy, and palm oil.

For the wood industry, the EUDR means stricter traceability requirements and greater transparency in supply chains. Companies must be able to demonstrate that their wood products are legally sourced and deforestation-free, which requires comprehensive due diligence (DD) processes.

A key tool for this is the TRACES system, where companies must declare product information and their origin. The centralized system maintained by the EU was originally designed to manage and monitor the import and export of live animals, food, feed, and plants within and outside the EU.

With the introduction of the EUDR, the role of the TRACES system has expanded to include verifying the origin and legality of raw materials covered by the regulation, such as wood products. Companies must submit detailed information about their products and their origin in the system to demonstrate that they do not come from areas affected by deforestation or illegal logging. In this way, TRACES serves as a key tool for ensuring compliance with the EUDR and preventing illegally produced commodities from entering the EU market.
